Eternity.
Certainly just a pretty word for us, mortals.
We cannot grasp the irrelevance of time.
We can imagine, certainly, a century, a millennium,
Some unfortunate can look beyond.
However, eons, billions, when time itself is of no importance,
When civilizations crumbles, covered by dust,
The planet you inhabited rusts, like the morality…
What was it again? Why you cared?
What is it – to care? Should you?
Sane and insane. The borders blur…everything fades.
You’ve seen everything there is to see and done everything there is to do.
Turns out the Universe is not a mystery.
There’s no secrets. No knowledge. No drive.
Radiant becomes bleak, and bleak becomes…tasteless.
It’s your constant. You wonder where’s the sense?
You had it, when your clock was ticking…
It is silent. Worse, it’s not needed.
How do you deal with it?
When death is no longer an excuse, how do you cope?
You don’t, because, for us, mortals
Forever is just a word and it ends when convenient.
I have come to terms with my mortality more than once and understand that death is inevitable but this poem gave me the chills. Great job 🙂

Death cannot be delayed. But soul is immortal. Having escaped near to death, I get my nerves chilled. Nice read Liz

Third time lucky. Here is what I meant to write:
A thought provoking read. There are, of course the Transhumanists who believe that we will, in the future be able to live forever via the use of uploading our consciousness to artificial brains and continuing to live in bodies composed of
silicon. Other Transhumanists hold that genetics can slow down and (perhaps) stop the ageing process and enhance our mental and physical capacities. Of
course Transhumanism would usher in a host of new problems (pressure on finite resources among many others), and whether people could, in fact live forever
is still (very much) up for debate. I remain an interested sceptic so far as eternal life is concerned. Best, Kevin

Yes, they say so – third time is a lucky charm 🙂 Transhumanism is exactly what sparkled this piece. It’s an interesting topic to ponder on. I’m ever the skeptic, but I cannot stop but wonder how it would feel. Best, Liz

Ah, I thought that Transhumanism might, perhaps have sparked your post. I have written a little on the subject myself, including this poem, https://newauthoronline.com/2018/02/22/the-judge-and-the-prisoner/. Best, Kevin

It was mostly TV-series “Altered Carbon”. The topic was explored and abused in it.
